Why SELLAM?
Problems in the Leather Industry

Even though India has large cattle population in the world, they are not properly maintained. So the hides and skins obtained from them contain various defects as discussed below in brief.

Defects in goat skin:
  • Tick damages
  • Grain defects
The grain defects along the back bone are due to the putrefactions. These defects considerably reduce the cutting value of leather, as they get further highlighted while lasting process in shoe making.

Defects in red hair sheep skin:
  • Open defects
  • Scratches
The skin shows open defects and scratches, which are formed due to thorns and barbed wires. These are considered open defects as they become more prominent while shoe lasting.

Defects in wool sheep skin:
  • Superficial defects
  • Deep defects
The skin defects along the backbone are classified superficial / deep defects according to the leather standards. These defects affect the uniform absorption of finish applied on the top, which finally depreciates the commercial value of leather.

In general, leather sourced out of wool sheep skins are largely used in the manufacture of leather garment that demands quality and aesthetic value uncompromised.

Defects in cow hide:
  • Ante mortem defects – Tick damages, Scratches, Open cuts
  • Post mortem defects – Pin holes
The deep pricks on the cow hides are caused by tick damage, while the scratches and open cuts are due to thorns, barbed wires. Besides these, some of the pin holes seen are due to grain putrefaction owing to defective curing.

Higher the grain defects, lower is the value of leather.

What shall we do to rectify these problems?

How to Upgrade the Lower selection leather to higher selection without sacrificing the natural grain?

SELLAM’s Innovative “Solutions for Selections”
The removal of valuable grain as a result of snuffing, results in loose grain. This diminishes the aesthetic look of leather and the shoe makers find it difficult while crimping the corrected grain leathers. Moreover, the market value of corrected grain leather degrades when compared with the classical full grain leather.

The aim for the innovation of Sellam products by our Research & Development team is to cover these defects without snuffing the grain, to preserve and enhance the grade of leather cost-effective.

As a result of the market research through the years, Sellam has launched
  • Revolutionary Cationic and Anionic Compacts in finishing range of products
  • Cationic Fillers in Wet End Process for upgradation
  • Protein Filler in Wet Blue Process for upgradation
to provide an everlasting service for the leather industry in India and globally.

Use Sellam’s upgradation filler to experience the advantage of a new concept in Wet Blue & Wet End processing and maximize your profits.
